Introduction:
In conjunction with the Second International Firefly Symposium 2010, a course will be conducted on Identification and Taxonomy of South East Asian Fireflies. The 5-day course will be hosted in Forest Research Institute Malaysia on 27-31 July 2010. Participants will be introduced to identification and taxonomy of the South East Asian firefly by two respected taxonomists: Dr. Lesley Ballantyne, from Charles Sturt University, Australia and Dr. Jeng Ming-Luen, from the National Museum of Natural Sciences, Taiwan. The knowledge of taxonomy and identification is important, especially to identify the diversity of the firefly species in this region and the knowledge acquired will help in conservation efforts of the fireflies in South East Asia.
Objective:
• To train participants in the recognition, identification, taxonomy and systematics of South East Asian fireflies.
• To promote capacity in taxonomy and identification of firefly.
Who Should Attend?
The course is open to researchers, lecturers and graduate students whose research or career would benefit from knowledge of the taxonomy of fireflies. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of insect taxonomy and biology.
Applications are open to a limited number of 20 participants. Selected candidates will be notified. Participants are also encouraged to bring along their laptops and specimens during the training course.
